Denver Square hall bathroom
A 1921 Denver Square with the original mortar-bed floor, a cast iron tub leaking at the flange and one very small window. Rebuilt as a walk-in shower with a vertical stack wall and a restored-feel hex floor.
What was there before
- Three inches of mortar bed over a 1x6 board subfloor
- Cast iron tub with a flange leak that had reached the joist ends
- Exhaust fan terminating in the attic
- Single ceiling fixture, no task lighting at the basin
Scope of work
- Mortar bed and tub removed, two joist ends sistered
- Alcove converted to a 60 by 32 walk-in with a low sloped curb
- Bonded liquid membrane, pre-sloped pan, linear drain at the back wall
- Vertical stack tile full height, hex mosaic floor with a border
- 110 CFM exhaust re-ducted through the gable wall
- Paired sconces at 62 inches plus a dimmable ceiling circuit

Outcome
The room reads twice its size because the tile runs full height and the glass panel has no door to break the line. The client kept the original window and we tiled the reveal rather than trimming it.
They found rot at the tub the first morning, photographed it, priced it that afternoon and it did not derail anything. That is not how our kitchen job went.
