What was there before

• Original 1936 hex floor, sound in the centre and failed at the tub
• Square wall tile with a failed mortar bed behind it
• Soft joist ends at the tub bearing
• Galvanised supplies, heavily scaled

Scope of work

• Original floor lifted in sections, sound tile cleaned and retained
• Matching hex sourced for the repaired area, shade lot checked against the original
• Joist ends sistered, subfloor replaced at the bearing
• Modern bonded membrane assembly behind period-correct wall tile
• Supplies replaced back to the stack in copper
• Cast iron tub re-enamelled off site and reset on a new bed

1" hex, original retained where sound, matched tile at the repair

4-1/4" square glazed tile, running bond, period glaze, bullnose cap

Waterproofing

Sheet membrane over backer, banded corners, behind period tile

Tub

Original cast iron, re-enamelled off site, reset on a levelled bed

Supplies

Galvanised replaced in copper back to the stack

Exhaust

80 CFM, 4 inch rigid, roof termination, humidity sensor

Timeline

1. Week 1

   Careful strip out, original tile lifted and sorted, tub removed for enamelling

2. Week 2

   Joist repair, subfloor, supplies replaced, rough-in, backer board

3. Week 3

   Membrane, flood test, floor relaid with matched tile, wall tile set

4. Week 4

   Tub reset, grout, fixtures, cap tile, snag, handover

Outcome

The room looks like nothing happened to it, which was the brief. Behind the period tile is a bonded membrane, banded corners and a flood-tested pan that the 1936 version never had.

My mother grew up in this house. They kept the floor and I honestly cannot tell you which tiles are new.
